1. Lessons by Ian McEwan

Cover of Lessons by Ian McEwan

This is one of my most anticipated reads of the last half of 2022! Because Ian McEwan is the author of the best-selling classic, Atonement! Need I say more? Does McEwan have another best-seller on his hands?

Join the main character, Roland Baines, as he confronts his personal demons while also struggling to make sense of major historical events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the fall of the Berlin Wall, Chernobyl, and the current pandemic.

2. Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong

Chloe Gong first came to my attention as a Book of The Month author with her debut novel, These Violent Delights, a Romeo and Juliet retelling. This author’s impressive prose and captivating storytelling earn her high marks.

Foul Lady Fortune is set in Shanghai in 1931. The main character is Rosalind Lang who was brought back from the brink of death by a strange experiment. As a result of her near-death experience, Rosalind can’t sleep, age, or die. She can heal from any wound. To atone for her past, she uses her abilities as an assassin for her country. Her code name is Fortune.

Rosalind teams up with another spy, Orion Hong, to investigate a string of murders. What will they discover?

3. The Winners by Fredrik Backman

Fredrik Backman is one of my top 10 favorite authors! This is one of the few authors who has successfully crossed genres. Some of his books are incredibly funny while some of his books are of a more serious nature.

The Winners is the final book in the Beartown series, the inspiration behind the HBO series. At the center of this novel is a small hockey town’s residents. Maya Andersson and Benji Ovich return and reunite with their childhood friends and recount how much has changed in Beartown. Maya’s parents are caught up in an investigation of the hockey club’s finances, and Amat is struggling after an injury. Add in the rivalry with the neighboring town of Hed, I am sure that we are in for an emotional journey with Backman at the pen!
